IIAMIS inauguration

Indo-Italian institute for maths, IT research on the cards.

An Indo-Italian Research Institute in the field of mathematics and information sciences will be established in Hyderabad. An agreement to this effect was signed here today.

To be called the International Institute of Applicable Mathematics and Information Sciences (IIAMIS), it would be housed atop the picturesque ‘Naubat Pahad’ in the centre of the city.

The B.M. Birla Science Centre, which has a planetarium, science museum and so on, on the hillock (Naubat Pahad), has offered the land and is a major partner in the venture. A five-floor structure is expected to be ready in the next 18 months, with funds from the Birla Centre and the Italian Government.

The Birla Science Centre, the University of Udine, Italian Embassy, C-DAC and the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) will be partners in this venture.

At the formal MoU signing, Prof. F. Honsell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Udine, said the IIAMIS will focus on developing joint projects in e-contents and personalised access to information using information filtering, virtual reality and Web 3D technologies, IT for preservation of cultural heritage and human-computer interaction and so on.

The IIAMIS is among the first joint laboratory project to get shape under the agreement signed by the then President of Italy, Mr H.E. Ciampi and India, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in 2005 in the field of applicable mathematics.

Dr B.G. Sidharth, Director-General, Birla Science Centre, said the centre and Udine University have a strong research and education relationship for the past eight years. Several Indian scholars have been able to visit Italy for research in IT-related areas and also complete doctoral courses.
